Month Without A Phone? It’s Not As Hard As It May Seem!

Yes, you read it right. I’ve been completely without a mobile phone for at least three weeks now. I’m sure that this is the worst nightmare for most of you and I definitely know why it may be like that. I didn’t think that I would last this long without a phone, although it’s particularly because of me that I don’t have it already. I for sure learned a lot in those two weeks and would like to share with you my thoughts.

To give you a little bit more of a background here is how I even ended up in this position. Few months ago my phone started to act up. I first had problem with my camera not want to focus and they a few months later the battery just didn’t work properly. I bought a new battery but it would charge the right way. At that point I could only charge it to 30%. When I got back home after my finals it totally stopped to charge. And since then I don’t have a phone.

You might wonder why didn’t I get it fixed or why didn’t a go to buy a new one. The reason is a mystery for me too. I realized that I’m not as obsessed with it as I thought I was. I know that if I really couldn’t live with it that I would immediately get it fixed or buy a new one. The weirdest thing is that I actually like it this way. I don’t have the urge to check my phone every 5 minutes or constantly take pictures and share them on social media. I definitely have its advantages and disadvantages.

Let's start with good things. I realized how much time my phone takes away from me. In those moments that I used to spend on social media now I have time to actually interact with real human beings and just live in the moment. I’m not glued to it and I started to notice random things that surround me. I have so much more time to properly relax and stay away from all the social drama. I’m not even thinking about checking what’s going on Twitter, Instagram or Facebook as I know that I can go to that when I get home and that now is time to actually live my life and not others. I noticed that my concentration got a lot better as I’m not constantly interrupted by phone ringing. I don’t feel pressured to tweet something or post a new photo on Instagram every single day.

While I was trying to think about negative things of not having a phone I honestly manage to think about only two things. The first one is not being able to contact my family and friends. Especially when the weather is this bad and I know my mom worries that I don’t get hurt. So the second one is that if I fall down or break my leg I wouldn’t be able to call for help. But as I believe in humanity I hope that strangers would still be as kind to give me a hand.

This was actually a great experience for me and although it was very insightful I’m planning to get a phone this week. Just because of the disadvantages that I mentioned. I definitely recommend you to try to disconnect for at least few days. You definitely feel free and happy.

What was the longest you’ve been without a phone?
