Dealing With Stressful Day, Week, Month...
These days it seems that more and more people are feeling stressed almost on daily bases. The sad thing about it is that there is no age, sex or location limit when it comes to stress. There is a lot of scientific researches about stress and it seems like it can drastically impact our overall health. I truly believe that how we deal with stress and stressful situation is what can help us to put it under control.
In my 22 years on this planet, I've had my fair share of stress, and I know that I'm probably going to deal with even more in the future. Being a university student there are always times when a stressful situation is just unavoidable. Finals are definitely one of them. I realized that although I do get stressed out there are some things that I found helpful. They are very simple and self-explanatory but exactly because of that a lot of people just forget about them.
HOW TO DEAL WITH STRESS?
DON'T SACRIFICE YOUR SLEEP
The worst thing you can do on days when you feel stressed is to mess up your sleeping schedule. It may seem like you need that extra few hours of the day to get some work done and try to get rid of the stress. The truth is that there are already enough hours in the day to work and there are hours that are required for rest. When you are stressed your body is working differently than it usually is and changing one more thing could make it even worse.
Try your best to go to bed at the proximately same time and wake up at the same time each morning. To work efficiently you need to have a good night's sleep. You won’t feel any less stressed if you overwork your body. It will only slow you down in dealing with those things that make your life not so easy at the moment. The great thing about a good night's sleep is that the next day you will feel much more energized and ready to deal with whatever comes at you.
REMEMBER TO BREATHE
When we feel under pressure we tend to get stiff. We are worried about different things and in the process, we forget to actually take a few concourse breaths. Some days can get extra overwhelming. Sometimes those days become weeks and in the worst-case scenario months. We are so focused on the thing we are dealing with that we get lost in it. In those kinds of situations, one of the ways to snap out of it is to just take a step back, calm down and breathe. Breath is a powerful thing we tend to take for granted.
Focusing on your breath can help you collect your mind and push through stressful situations much faster than we usually would. When stress levels start to make your whole body and mind suffocating reach for the most natural thing for humans. Go back to your breath. Just a few deep and conscious breaths can make your mind and body relaxed and ready to get back to work.
When we are stressed out we tend to focus only on that one or multiple things that are bringing stress to our life at the moment. Most of the time we fall into this black hole of sadness and disappointment. It feels like we can’t get rid of stress as much as we’ve been trying to. Although it may seem as we are not moving in the right direction that is not the truth. The problems lay in the fact that we are only focusing on the negative. Because we feel tired we want to give up. It is because we don’t look at the positive side of things.
We tend to forget what comes after we push through that stressful situation we are dealing with. When you imagine the end goal it makes all the hard work and stress easier to bear. There is something we can look forward to. When you change the way you think about things then you will realize that dealing with stressful situations doesn’t need to be that bad. It is all in our mind and the perspective we decide to embrace.
DON'T BE HARD ON YOURSELF
Sometimes when we are under a lot of pressure, we tend to be too hard on ourselves. That is partly because we are scared of failures and even the thought of them makes us even more stressed. I know that in those kinds of situations we can’t really think straight us we are overwhelmed by the things going on around us. We should still try to notice when our self-criticism is harming us more than it is benefiting us. All the things mentioned before are what can help us to do that. As long as you are trying hard and doing the best you can, you should try to appreciate and acknowledge that.Stressful days, week and months will always come, it is how we deal with them that counts. Life is full of moments that just make us feel suffocated and under pressure. Realizing that the only thing you can control is the way you respond to those kinds of stressful situations. Don’t let them get to you more than they should. Stress can negatively affect all stages of your life. Be sure to always take care of your body and mind no matter what.
