Things I've Stopped Buying & Reasons Why

We live in a world where almost everything is focused on selling and buying. The consumerism is rooted in our lives. We are surrounded by so many materialistic things and a lot of people don’t know when it’s a right time to stop. I realized that throughout last year I stopped buying a lot of things that I would normally buy without even thinking about it. I shifted my perspective on the materialism and consumer society. It’s easy to get lost in all the ads and marketing trick that are trying to get us buying thing that we don’t even need or at least not in that way.

I wanted to share with you some of the things that I’ve stopped buying and the reasons behind them. I just want to make clear that this doesn’t mean that I’m not going to buy any of these products again, it just means that I’m more mindful when it comes to buying and the way I do it.

BEAUTY
Makeup wise I stopped purchasing quite a lot of products. I realized that I don’t need to own 10 eye-shadow palettes, 3 foundations, 4 blushes, 20 lip products and so on. In my current makeup bag I only have 4 products in total. They are foundation, mascara, lip balm and concealer. It can get quite easy to get lost in all the beauty products as the influence of beauty gurus is quite big. Especially when you’re young and you look up to them. Since I was never really into heavy makeup looks I noticed that I don’t need a lot of products as they would probably go to waste. Products that I used to buy but not anymore are eyeliner, eye-shadow, blusher, lipstick and eye-pencil.

Another thing I stopped buying is nail polish. It’s been over a year since I stopped painting my nails. Quality nail polishes can be quite expensive. As I’m one of those people who can’t stand having even a one nail chipped, as I then immediately take it off, I realized that I just don’t need to paint my nails in the first place. I quite like them how they are natural. I don’t buy body lotions and creams as well. I either get them as a present or just use homemade ointment.

CLOTHES
Last time I bought a clothing piece was a month ago and that was in second shop and because I really needed it. I never go clothes shopping just because it’s on sale or if I don’t think beforehand if I really need it. Having a closet full of clothes that I never wear is in my opinion just a waste of money and space. Although clothing pieces are something we just need to buy, there are definitely ways that are better than others. I'm sure that you are familiar with the harm that fast fashion is doing to the environment.

Special occasion clothes is something that I don’t buy anymore as I have enough dresses that I can wear to a wedding, birthday party or something like that. I was never one of those who don’t like to be seen in one dress a multiple times. I’m not really a dress kind of girl so I know that if I was to buy a new dress for each occasion I would just have a hundred dresses that I wore for just one day. With dresses I also don’t buy high heels. I personally don’t like to wear them. I have 3 pairs of heels that I can wear if I really need to.

HOME-DECOR
I love interior design a lot. It’s something that was always so interesting to me. I used to buy a lot of pillows, candles and little décor pieces. I don’t do that anymore as I realized that cluttering my home with a lot of items isn’t really something that brings me happiness. I used to be obsessed with pillows. I still have quite a lot of them but I’m not buying new ones. I’m happy with the ones I have now and don’t need more of them. This goes for candles and other items. There is no reason for me to have five different candles. I also noticed that most of the time I don’t even light them and they just stay on my bedside table.

I know that a lot of people have a mug obsession and I must admit that I was one of them. I don’t really know what it is that makes us so enchanted by them. I used to want to buy almost every single mug I saw. Now I probably have just three that are pretty enough. I know that these are the ones that I always use and that there is no need to have ten more just collecting dust in the cupboard. Another thing that I don’t buy anymore is magazines, journals and newspapers. I can find information that I’m interested in online without spending a penny. For me, blogs replaced magazines in the best possible way.
